Over the past year, I've ventured into a career transition where passion has been at the forefront of my exploration. For years, I thoroughly enjoyed my position as an HR/People & Change Consultant. I felt fulfilled in my ability to empower the team, nurture their professional connections, and facilitate their growth through initiatives like benefits, social events, and engagement programs. Passion has consistently driven my professional endeavours. Therefore, it was enlightening to come across various articles debating the significance of passion in the context of career changes.
The prospect of a career change often prompts individuals to reflect deeply on their professional aspirations, personal values, and long-term goals. Amidst the plethora of advice available, one recurring theme is the importance of passion. Conventional wisdom suggests that pursuing one's passion is key to finding career fulfilment and success. However, recent discourse has challenged this notion, raising questions about the role of passion in the context of career transitions. In this article, we explore the debate surrounding the necessity of passion for a career change, drawing insights from articles by Rafael Tercarolli on LinkedIn in March 2023 and Julia Wuench on Forbes in May 2021, so despite there being a large gap in dates written, I thought those considering a career change might enjoy the contrasting opinions, when considering their own life choices.
In his thought-provoking piece on LinkedIn, Rafel Tercarolli advocates for the pursuit of passion as a driving force behind career change. Tercarolli contends that it is never too late to pursue one's passions and make a meaningful career shift. He emphasises the transformative power of passion, urging individuals to break free from societal norms and embrace their true interests and aspirations. Tercarolli's perspective resonates with many who view passion as essential for finding fulfilment and purpose in their professional lives.
Contrary to this viewpoint, Julia Wuench challenges the notion that passion is a prerequisite for career success in her Forbes article. Wuench argues that the advice to "follow your passion" can be misleading and even harmful.
